Jeicy Camera Works & Konica FR Prototype: Rare Leica Copies from Japan – Jo Geier – Mint & Rare
In this video, Jo Geier of Mint & Rare near Vienna and co-founder of Wetzlar Camera Auctions presents two exceptionally rare Japanese Leica copies from the 1950s — cameras so uncommon that even many advanced collectors have never seen one in person.
The first is the Jeicy, made by Kumagai Genji in extremely small quantities, most likely as a single-person business. It is probably one of the top five rarest Leica copies ever manufactured. Only two examples are known to survive. Although the top cover is engraved with “Jeicy Camera Works,” this name did not correspond to an actual company. That only adds to the mystery around this camera and its maker.
What makes it so special:
– A Japanese Leica copy from the 1950s
– Made by Kumagai Genji in extremely small numbers
– Only two surviving examples known today
– Top cover engraving: Jeicy Camera Works
– Equipped with the very rare Sun Sophia 1:2/5cm lens No. 72716
– One of the ultimate rarities among Leica copies
The second camera is the Konica FR, a prototype that moves much closer to the Leica M direction. At least six prototypes are believed to have been manufactured by Konica, but only very few are known today — and even fewer survive as complete sets.
A closer look at what sets it apart:
– A 1950s Japanese Leica M style prototype
– A design resembling the Leica M4 direction
– Prototype lens engraving with the serial number 123456
– The “4” marking, indicating the fourth lens of the known prototype series
– One of only a handful of complete Konica FR sets known today
